Shilajit and Gut Health: What's Actually Known

Digestion and microbiome claims attach themselves to nearly every supplement. Here is what human research actually says about shilajit and gut health.

Gut health and microbiome claims attach themselves to almost every supplement category now, and shilajit is no exception. Here is an honest look at what is actually known about shilajit and digestion.

Preliminary: one or two small human trials Limited: inconsistent or indirect evidence Unknown: no adequate human trials

Digestion

Digestion, nutrient absorption

Unknown

Direct answer: we are not aware of a human trial testing shilajit's effect on digestion or nutrient absorption.

Shilajit has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine, sometimes described as an aid to nutrient assimilation. That traditional framing is real, but it predates modern clinical trial methodology and is not the same thing as controlled evidence of a digestive effect. We separate the two rather than let tradition stand in for a study.

Gut microbiome

Gut microbiome composition

Unknown

Direct answer: we are not aware of any human research on shilajit and gut microbiome composition specifically.

Microbiome research is a fast-growing field generally, and it is easy for a supplement to pick up "supports your microbiome" language without a study behind it for that specific product. We have not found dedicated shilajit-microbiome research, and we are not going to imply otherwise.

Not where the evidence is

Gut health is not an area with meaningful evidence behind shilajit, and we would rather tell you that directly than attach a trendy claim to the product because it is popular elsewhere. See our evidence-graded benefits overview for the claims that do have real, if often limited, research behind them.
