Shilajit Benefits: What the Evidence Actually Shows

Most shilajit benefit claims are not backed by adequate human research. Here is what current evidence actually shows, graded honestly, topic by topic.

Search "shilajit benefits" and you will find long lists: energy, testosterone, cognitive function, anti-aging, immunity, skin, and more. Most of these claims are not backed by adequate human research. This page grades what current evidence actually shows, topic by topic, rather than repeating the list.

Preliminary

Direct answer: one randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Pandit et al., 2016) gave 250 mg purified shilajit twice daily to healthy men aged 45 to 55 for 90 days and reported significantly increased total and free testosterone versus placebo.

Why we grade it preliminary: it is a single study with a small sample, in one age group, and it has not been independently replicated. A promising signal is not the same as an established effect.

Direct answer: a small number of trials, including Keller et al. (2019) on muscular fatigue, suggest possible effects on fatigue-related markers, but samples are small and results are inconsistent across studies.

Why we grade it limited: study designs, doses and outcome measures differ too much to support a firm conclusion. More and larger trials are needed before anyone should buy shilajit primarily for this.

Everything else commonly claimed

Cognitive function, skin and hair, weight management, immunity, anti-aging, mood: all of these appear regularly in shilajit marketing, including on some of our own competitors' sites. As of this writing, we are not aware of adequate human trials that would let any of these be graded above "unknown, no adequate human trials." We would rather say that plainly than round a hopeful claim up to something it is not. If that changes as new research is published, this page will be updated to reflect it.

Why we grade evidence this way

No EU-authorised health claim currently exists for shilajit, so we make none, on this page or anywhere else on our site. Long traditional use is real and worth telling, but it is history, not clinical evidence, and we never blur the two into one sentence. What we can verify directly is what is in the jar: fulvic acid and humic acid content, and freedom from heavy-metal and microbial contamination, confirmed by an independent laboratory on every batch.
