Benefits & Evidence

Shilajit for Men: Testosterone and Performance

Does shilajit raise testosterone, help erectile dysfunction, or affect fertility? Graded honestly, separately, against real evidence.

"Shilajit for men" searches usually mean one of a few specific questions: does it raise testosterone, does it help with erectile dysfunction, does it affect fertility. This page grades each honestly, separately, rather than bundling them into one vague "men's health" claim.

Preliminary: one or two small human trials Limited: inconsistent or indirect evidence Unknown: no adequate human trials

Testosterone

Testosterone markers

Preliminary

Direct answer: one randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Pandit et al., 2016) gave 250 mg purified shilajit twice daily to healthy men aged 45 to 55 for 90 days and reported significantly increased total and free testosterone versus placebo.

Why we grade it preliminary: a single study, small sample, one specific age group, not independently replicated. This is a real, published finding, not a marketing invention, but one study is a signal, not an established effect.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction

Unknown

Direct answer: we are not aware of adequate human trials testing shilajit specifically for erectile dysfunction, a diagnosed medical condition.

Erectile dysfunction can have many underlying causes, some of them medical conditions that need a doctor's diagnosis, not a supplement. Shilajit is a food supplement, not a medicine, and we do not claim it treats, cures or prevents any disease or condition, including this one. If you are experiencing ongoing erectile dysfunction, that is worth raising with a doctor directly.

Fertility and sperm count

Fertility & sperm count

Unknown

Direct answer: we are not aware of adequate human trials specifically testing shilajit's effect on male fertility or sperm count.

Some preclinical and small studies exist in this general area across the wider supplement literature, but we have not found evidence specific to shilajit, at a scale or quality that supports a fertility claim. Fertility is a medical topic; a food supplement label is not the place to make that call, and we are not going to.

Stamina and general performance

Beyond the testosterone finding above, broader "stamina" or "performance" claims for men specifically are not supported by dedicated shilajit research we are aware of. See our page on shilajit benefits: what the evidence actually shows for the fuller picture, including the limited-grade fatigue and exercise recovery findings that are not specific to men.

Frequently asked questions

Does shilajit increase testosterone?

One small trial in men aged 45 to 55 found an increase versus placebo over 90 days. It has not been independently replicated, so we grade this preliminary, not established.

Can shilajit help with erectile dysfunction?

We are not aware of adequate human trials testing this specifically, and we do not make treatment claims for medical conditions. Speak to a doctor about ongoing erectile dysfunction.

Does shilajit affect fertility or sperm count?

We are not aware of adequate shilajit-specific human research on this. We are not going to claim an effect we cannot back with a real trial.
