Safety & Interactions

Shilajit During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

No dedicated safety research exists for shilajit in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Here is why we recommend asking a doctor first, honestly explained.

Our answer here is short and it does not hedge: if you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive, ask your doctor before taking shilajit. This page explains why, honestly, rather than dressing a simple precaution up as something more complicated.

Why we recommend avoiding it without medical advice

There is no dedicated safety research on shilajit specifically in pregnant or breastfeeding women that we are aware of. This is not the same as evidence of harm; it is an absence of the kind of study that would let anyone say with confidence that it is safe in these specific, physiologically different circumstances. Pregnancy and breastfeeding change how the body processes many substances, and the standard, responsible position for any food supplement without dedicated safety data in these groups is caution, not an assumption of safety.

Trying to conceive

The same reasoning applies. We are not aware of dedicated research on shilajit and fertility or conception in either women or men, covered in more depth on our page on shilajit for women. Without that evidence, "ask your doctor first" is the honest, precautionary answer, not a specific documented risk we are pointing to.

What this is, and is not, based on

This is a precaution based on missing data, not a claim that shilajit is known to be harmful in pregnancy. We are being explicit about that distinction because we think it matters: overstating a risk is its own kind of dishonesty, the same as understating one. What we can say plainly is that the responsible position, given no dedicated safety research exists in these groups, is to check with a doctor before use, not to guess in either direction.

If you are already taking it and become pregnant

Stop and speak to your doctor or midwife, and follow their guidance. This is standard advice for any food supplement once pregnancy is confirmed, not specific to shilajit.
